Last July I had the honor of turning a vintage qui Last July I had the honor of turning a vintage quilt top made by Mama Alma into an heirloom quilt. Sarah @skprat13 sent me another one of her great grandmother's creations to help give it the life it was meant to live...as a real quilt to be cuddled up with and loved and appreciated. These fabrics were made from aprons, dresses, maternity clothes, nursing scrubs and children's clothes. How wonderful!

I love getting vintage tops to finish! I love seeing all of the fabrics! I always inspect these quilts so they can tell me their story. I learn a lot about the quilter, the quilt, and some of the issues I'll need to tackle. A seam might need a repair. They usually present some sort of challenge. I like a good challenge! This one was the most bias quilt pattern I've ever seen!

But Mama Alma knew how to tackle those biased edges - because she basted the heck out of this quilt!! I didn't realize it at first, but as I was inspecting the quilt I noticed a lot of loose threads sticking out all over the place. I normally don't pull random threads on vintage quilts before quilting, but as I was looking I noticed these threads were thick. They weren't the same color thread as the other hand stitches either. And there were thick knots all over. That's when I realized that these were basting stitches and that they had been cut, but not pulled out yet. I wouldn't have pulled them out but the knots were very big and if my needle hit them it could have caused all sorts of issues! (Swipe through to see the basting threads...I even made a video!)

So...I spent some quality time taking out all of these basting threads. It was easy since they were already cut, but there were a lot of them! And, because I was NOT going to be the one to throw away Mama Alma's basting threads, I saved every last one! 😆 I told Sarah she could throw them away if she wanted to. But I suggested dying them and putting them into a clear glass ball ornament and give it as a gift!

I love how this quilt turned out! I hope Sarah and Mama Alma did too!

This summer was filled with lots of activities. Qu This summer was filled with lots of activities. Quilting took a bit of a back seat between my husband's back surgery, summer garden planting and harvest, dealing with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome pain and a new grandbaby joining the family. But I did get a few quilts done for customers!

My quilty friend Gail made this cat quilt from her father's shirts. These shirts she's had for over 30 years and finally put them into a quilt. I asked her what he did for a living as there were a lot of spots and stains (which I love in memory quilts) and she said he was a welder/steam fitter. Ah ha! Makes so much sense now! These shirt fabrics were so soft! They made an even better quilt after so many years in a closet.

Great work Gail!

Oh, my son's cat is visiting while he's off living his musical theatre dream in New Mexico after he graduated with his Master's Degree. It seemed like Momo would make the perfect prop to go with this quilt! What do you think?

I wanted to share with you how I go about matching I wanted to share with you how I go about matching my stripes on my bias binding strips.

First I draw a line 1/4" from the edge of the strip on the right side of the fabric and on the strip that will be on top. I use a Frixion pen.

I finger crease at the line - wrong sides touching. I usually pinch with my fingers making sure I'm not mishaping it as I work my way down the edge

Then I use a glue stick and apply glue to the right side of the fabric on that 1/4" section. I make sure to get the glue close to the folded edge and leave that other cut end of that folded piece as glue free as possible. This will help when you go to open that seam.

I find the match on the bottom strip (right side up) to the piece I just put the glue on and when I get it just right I finger press it down. I make sure the match is as good as I can get it, but concentrate more on the center than the edges, as the center will be what's seen.

Then I open up the strip on top and sew down the creased line. I pull apart the glued section (do this while your glue is still a bit moist instead of waiting till dry) then iron the seam open. The Frixion pen mark is gone and you look like a sewing genius! 😃

I used both my Accuquilt cutter and my Stripology XL ruler to cut my bias strips and see which one I liked better. They both did the job just fine! The Stripology ruler gave me less waste, but not by much. Some days my arm doesn't want to cooperate and the Accuquilt is my best friend on those days!

I'd like to tell you a story... This is a story a I'd like to tell you a story...

This is a story about a quilter and a longarm quilter.

The quilter I heard about during the pandemic; although she wasn't a quilter yet. She wasn't really a sewist either. She helped a group of quilters and sewists who got together and used their gifts, talents and abilities to make over 4000 masks during the pandemic. She cut fabric and helped to deliver the cut fabric to those who sewed them together.

Once we were able to meet in person she was encouraged to try her hand at sewing. She made lap quilts for those who were sick and recovering from sickness. These were just large squares cut and sewn together in similar style as this Spider-Man quilt. Not fancy, but a blessing nonetheless.

This quilter started making bags and other things...she just found a love of sewing, belonging to this group of caring and giving women, and is just the sweetest lady!

This Spider-Man quilt is for her grandson who is moving into a big bed since her baby sister arrived. He's going to love it!

The squares on this quilt aren't all the same size. The corners don't always match up. There are puckers and folds and the pieced backing was the same.

But that isn't the point of this quilt!!!! The point is a little boy has a Spider-Man quilt that his grandmother made for him!!!

I worked just as hard on this quilt as on any other in my queue. As a matter of fact, I may have worked harder as I had my first bobbin thread mishap and had to rip out a 3 foot section.

I used all the tools of the trade and my experience to fix this area: seam ripper, hemostats, scissors, water sprayer, hair dryer, toothbrush, lint roller, and prayer!!
It turned out so good!!

The moral of this story is: make the quilt, with all of its imperfections. This is the beginning of Suanne's quilt making journey. Don't compare your now to others who may have been doing this for years... just do it!

I'm so happy for Suanne and her grandson and thankful I got to play a small part in her quilt story!

This weekend we hosted a baby shower for our 9th g This weekend we hosted a baby shower for our 9th grand baby. It will be the first for any of our sons. It's also the first time I've made a quilt before they were born! The last picture is of me on the morning of the shower finishing it before getting dressed for the party!

I had some great help this weekend as my twin daughters @julzua004 & @blugtargrl03 helped me get the house and decorations fixed up. My honey @dadgoneonatrail made sure the outside was looking good and was my Johnny on the spot for anything else I needed.

We were happy to host my daughter- in-law's @devlynn73 family and friends as well as my son Luke's friend. We were surprised by Luke's Aunt who came from Tennessee and sad to miss his other Aunt who had to be with her husband because of a health emergency.

Grandkids, family, friends and celebration as well as gardening, pool time, barbecuing and hanging out together. It's nice to just be in the moment and enjoying our little corner of the world!

Leanna...we await your arrival!

This t-shirt quilt came to me as my first local qu This t-shirt quilt came to me as my first local quilt from Jacksonville. We've been here for almost 2 years. Since my husband works where we used to live he picks up my quilt tops and brings them to me and he delivers them to my customers all quilted up!

T-shirt quilts are great as you get a glimpse into the person who wore the shirts. We chose diagonal plaid as the pantograph choice and it totally looks like a baseball diamond on this baseball t-shirt quilt! WIN!

Fun fact about this quilt: my neighbor and his son had their names on this quilt!

I made Dutch baby pancakes for my husband this mor I made Dutch baby pancakes for my husband this morning. His birthday is on Tuesday and I won't be able to be with him. He's as special as these pancakes are to me. ❤

When I was a kid living in Palm Springs, California, my mother would take me to Elmer's Pancake House where I would order these special pancakes. They puff up beyond the pan and are so tasty with lemon, powdered sugar, and butter. That's also how I've eaten my French toast my entire life so eating Dutch babies this way seems "right" to me.
As a way to incorporate my mother this weekend I thought it would be a nice way to also honor my husband.

I used a recipe from @butteredsideupblog if you're curious about this sourdough Dutch baby pancake recipe.

Bon appetit!

This beautiful Hidden Gems quilt was made by my ne This beautiful Hidden Gems quilt was made by my new piecing friend, Cathy.

Can we talk about community for a minute?

In 2019 I joined the Longarm League... even before I got my longarm, just to be ready! I found a wonderful community of longarm quilters there and a wealth of knowledge!

I joined a group of quilters who did charity work while they fellowshipped and quilted.

I also joined 2 quilting guilds and went to my first guild meeting in my new town last week.

It's so nice to be able to connect with people where you share such a love for sewing and quilting. It makes fast friends, that's for sure!

Back to my quilting friend Cathy, she was new to town, but quilting helped her to connect to two new quilting guilds and friends! I love that quilting can do that!

Find your tribe!

Cathy's quilt was made with these beautiful Kansas Troubles fabrics. I love the deep jewel tones! Not only did she have them on the front, she had some blocks made from Golden's Journal and she put them on her backing!

Since this quilt was going to be a wedding gift we decided on "Heart Fancy" for the pantograph. And to show it off we chose Quilter's Dream wool batting...it always gives such a wonderful texture.

Tools! I'm all about good tools that help you do Tools!

I'm all about good tools that help you do your job better. Whether that's in the kitchen, the garden, or the sewing room, give me all the gadgets that make my life better!

I recently saw that Baby Lock had a quilt binding foot (BLSA-QBF). I have a Baby Lock Ellisimo Gold II that I got in 2015. It was the floor model and it had nearly every attachment and upgrade so I haven't purchased many extra things for her. This foot is AWESOME!

A few things to know about me is that I have a condition called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. It causes my right arm to be weak and it has drawn up my elbow so I can't straighten it. Hand binding a quilt is just not something I can do. So, machine binding it is, then!

As a recovering perfectionist 😜, this foot helps me to not stress about how the stitching on the binding will look because it's going to look GREAT even if the lack of strength in my right arm isn't the best!

Tip number 2: Glue baste that binding down and you've got a match made in heaven!

Ok...on with your day! I just had to share!
